Pride In Movement Physical Therapy
My Approach & Story
Safe Space, Not A Classroom
You shouldn’t have to spend your physical therapy appointment acting as a teacher. In many clinics, explaining your situation can feel like an unnecessary barrier to your care. This is a queer-owned, affirming space where you don't have to explain yourself - I already get it.
I’ve heard it all, and nothing you're experiencing is "weird" or "gross". If you’ve ever left an appointment feeling unheard or gaslit - like your provider just waved away all of your symptoms, know that you are the expert on your own body here. I am here to listen, validate your story, and partner with you to find a real solution.
Movement Optimism Over Scare Tactics
I want you to leave every session knowing more about your body and less afraid of it. Traditional medical silos often use "scare tactics" - like calling your spine a "mess"or instilling fear with "degenerative changes" - to describe normal signs of aging. These labels make you feel like a fragile machine, but the reality is that your body is incredibly robust and built to move.
Your MRI is not a death sentence - just signs of a body that moves. We ditch the fear-mongering in favor of Movement Optimism. We will be active partners in your recovery, ensuring you understand the "why" behind your care so you can start trusting your strength again.
Expertise Without the "Factory Loop"
When you’re with me, every minute is dedicated solely to your recovery. Forget the "PT Factory" model where you meet a PT for ten minutes before being handed off or being seen among 2 or more other patients. In this practice, you get a full 60-minute 1:1 session with a Doctor of Physical Therapy - me - every single visit.
This 1:1 approach means no double-booking, no rushing, and no waiting weeks for a referral. By using a Hybrid Lens, Dr Riley addresses your body as a connected system rather than disconnected parts. This level of attention leads to deeper insights, faster results, and a plan built for your actual life.

About Me
Hi! I'm Dr. Riley Shea (he/him)
I created Pride In Movement PT because I was tired of seeing patients get lost in the "medical silo". You shouldn’t have to bounce between specialists for years just to get a straight answer about your own body. As a queer provider, my goal is to create a level of safe, inclusive, and personalized care that ensures you feel understood from the moment you walk in.
My approach to recovery is personal. Having navigated my own journey with chronic pain, I’ve developed a strong interest in the neuroscience behind how the brain processes "threat" and "safety". This informs every treatment plan I build. I believe your body is robust and adaptable - not a fragile machine waiting to break - and I want to show you this reality too.
My clinical foundation combines two worlds that rarely talk to each other:
Orthopedic Expertise: With a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy, I understand how the body handles complex injuries and movement. And I understand how important it is to not fear that movement and be able to return to the activities you love with confidence.
Pelvic Health Specialty: I learned pelvic health PT under Dr. Adrienne McAuley, one of the authors of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Urgency Urinary Incontinence, Urinary Urgency, and Urinary Frequency in Adult Women. (Link to Journal). This training makes me uniquely equipped to treat the "taboo" symptoms - like leaking and pelvic pain -that most clinics ignore. I treat all genders at my clinic to provide equal access to everyone.
I'm a local Mainer, having grown up in Portland and when I’m not in the office, I’m living out my "Movement Optimism" with Pride Sports Portland. Whether it’s dodgeball, pickleball, kickball, or volleyball, I believe movement should be fun, inclusive, and fear-free.
I’d love to talk about how I can help you bypass the red tape and get back to your life. Book a call with me, and let’s get to work.
